Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny denounces “blatantly illegal detention” at court hearing - BBC News

The leading Russian opposition figure and Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has denounced his continued detention calling it “blatantly illegal”, after his appeal to be freed from jail was rejected by a judge in Moscow.

Mr Navalny was detained ten days ago, accused of failing to comply with a suspended sentence.

Tens of thousands of Russians have taken to the streets in support of Mr Navalny in recent days. The opposition leader says he was the target of an assassination attempt last August, using a novichok-type nerve agent.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg.
