Jamaica’s prime minister has told the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge that his country is “moving on” and will become a Republic, removing the Queen as head of state.
The royal couple, who are on a tour to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee, were addressed in public by Andrew Holness who told them:
“Jamaica is a country that is very proud of our history and very proud of what we have achieved. We are moving on and we intend to attain… our true ambitions as an independent, developed, prosperous country.”
Calls for Jamaica to break its ties with the monarchy have been growing. It follows the decision of Barbados to become a republic.
The royal couple’s arrival on the island was also marked by a public demonstration calling on the monarchy to pay reparations for slavery.
