Malaria spike in Pakistan and Mozambique due to climate change, report says - BBC News

Climate change is driving up the number of malaria cases in Pakistan and Mozambique, according to a new report.

The study by the Global Fund said recent extreme weather led to a spike in cases of the mosquito-borne disease.

It cited last year’s devastating floods in Pakistan as fuelling a significant rise in cases. It also warned that warmer climates were enabling the spread of the mosquito population.

According to the latest World Health Organization data, Africa continues to shoulder the heaviest burden of the disease, accounting in 2021 for an estimated 95% of all malaria cases and 96% of all deaths, with most fatalities among children under the age of five.
