What could ‘voice cloning’ technology mean for society? - BBC News

In January 2023, ElevenLabs released a trial version of its AI speech software intended for dubbing movies.

Given a minute of a person speaking, the software can quickly put together a ‘clone’ of that person’s voice.

It went viral, with the public using the technology to clone the voices of celebrities and politicians.

The BBC’s James Clayton investigates the impact voice cloning technology could have on society – from  scams to the 2024 US election.
