For many in Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon’s resignation as the country’s longest standing first minister came as a shock, but for others in the SNP it’s less of a surprise.
After the gruelling years of the pandemic where she was generally judged to have been surefooted, she has faced criticism for both her style of leadership, and most recently her handling of the trans debate in Scotland – specifically the gender recognition reform bill which Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has now attempted to block.
On the question of a second referendum she has always put legality first, and at the moment there is no route beyond the agreement of Westminster for a new vote.
But after eight years in the public eye as first minister, she’s indicated that she can no longer give the job everything she has. So, what next for the SNP and the campaign for Scottish independence?
